Good news from an American vaccine expert: Omicron is the beginning of the end of the epidemic
The professor at the American “Vanderbilt” Center for Vaccines: The new mutation is a safe way to train the human immune system, which helps to achieve rapid community immunity, and pave the way for the transmission of the virus from an epidemic situation to an endemic

While the Omicron mutant continues to spread rapidly in most parts of the world, especially in the European continent, where many countries broke new records on Thursday in the number of daily injuries, most notably Germany, in which injuries exceeded the threshold of 200 thousand, we are getting a glimmer of hope from an American expert confirming that we are close to the end .

An expert at the American “Vanderbilt University” Center for Vaccines, according to Al Jazeera Net, agreed with what some have said about the positive impact that the world can reap from the emergence of a highly prevalent Omicron mutant with pathological symptoms that are not dangerous.

James Crowe, a professor at the Vanderbilt Center, supported the view that “these specifications make the new mutant a safe way to train the human immune system, which helps to achieve rapid community immunity, and pave the way for the transmission of the virus from an epidemic to an endemic state.”

Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper quoted Crowe as saying that “this is a reasonable scenario, which has the approval of many experts.”

Beginning of the End

Like many who have taken this view, Crowe refuses to predict a specific date for the end of the epidemic situation of the virus, adding: “Omicron is the beginning of the end, but it is clear that predicting the near future with Covid-19 is difficult.”

And if the Omicron mutant has the advantage that it does not cause serious symptoms that require hospitalization, but it has more than 30 mutations in the spinal protein on the surface of the virus (Spike protein), which has lost the vaccines that were designed according to the composition of this protein in the original strain, a lot of effectiveness Crowe confirms, however, that vaccines are not back to ground zero, and he says: “Vaccines still stimulate reactive antibodies that can recognize Omicron, especially after a third booster dose of vaccines.”

Crowe stresses the importance of this booster dose, noting that it helps greatly to ensure that the new mutant, when infected, does not cause any serious symptoms.
The world is no longer ground zero

Just as the world has not returned to ground zero in vaccines, despite the many mutations in the Omicron mutant, which made it different from the original strain, the same applies to antibody therapies. Antibody treatments are used to prevent patients from contracting severe diseases from Covid-19, and some of them are also used to prevent disease, and Omicron mutations have caused many of them to lose their effectiveness, as confirmed by a study in which Crowe participated, and published on January 19 in the journal Nature Medicine. Nature Medicine, but noted in his remarks that “some antibody therapies are still effective.”

And about his evaluation of the BA.2 omicron sub-mutant, or what some like to call “the hidden omicron”, due to the difficulty of monitoring it through the PCR test, and whether it could make the situation worse with regard to the efficacy of antibody drugs and vaccines, he adds. The American expert said: “The virulence of this mutant is not yet clear, and there is not enough data available to indicate whether this variant is more resistant to approved vaccines or antibodies.”
European Medicines Agency approves Pfizer

On Thursday, the European Medicines Regulatory Authority approved the use of the anti-Covid drug “Pfizer” in the first oral treatment of its kind for the disease, to obtain a license in Europe.

The European Medicines Agency said in a statement that it “recommended the use of Paxlovid for the treatment of Covid-19 in adults who (…) are at an increased risk of developing more severe symptoms of the disease.”

Simultaneously, the American pharmaceutical company “Moderna” announced that it will begin clinical trials of a booster vaccine dose designed specifically to combat the mutant Omicron.

On Thursday, Britain lifted almost all restrictions aimed at combating the outbreak of Covid-19, in the hope, according to the government, that the country’s population will get used to living with Covid-19 as if it were the flu.

The lifting of restrictions, which gives space and aims to replace legal procedures with “advice or recommendations”, solves at a time when Boris Johnson is facing difficulties following the scandals he hosted in Downing Street, which violated the anti-Covid-19 restrictions at the time.

The Corona virus has killed at least 5,625,889 people in the world since it appeared in China in December 2019.

The United States recorded the highest number of deaths from the virus (876,066), followed by Brazil (624,413), India (491,700) and Russia (328,770).

The World Health Organization estimates that the total number of deaths may be two to three times higher, taking into account the increased number of deaths directly and indirectly related to the epidemic.
